Are You Who You Want to Be?

Who do you look up to and want to emulate or model? What traits do you want to own and use? What does changing provide for you and your career?
The question implies a need for you to change. Yes, that ugly, scary, and uncomfortable risk-taking process that everyone hates. The word ‘change’ gives us all the heebie-jeebies because we know how much work is required to accomplish it.
Why change?
What improvements in your life, health, and circumstances would you like to see in yourself? Think of three things you know require changing but feel stuck and immobilized.
What needs to happen for you to implement the necessary changes to achieve this new vision of yourself? Does the change/risk have enough value for you to invest energy into the effort? Is the value of the change worth the risk necessary to get there?
This article is about you wanting to change and applying the changes. In four decades of executive coaching, getting a person to agree to start changing their thinking and behavior is step one in achieving their outcomes and goals. Beginning with tiny changes gives you the courage to take on more significant risks/changes.
A 1987 book, Change Your Mind, and Keeping the Change, by Connirae Andreas, Steve Andreas, and others, goes into excruciating detail about their process for success.
Here are some of my suggestions for you to effect change in your life:
Awareness is step one in recovery, grief work, and seeing the world as it is today. Becoming aware of what is happening around you, changes that occur, and how these changes impact you helps point out what is possible and feasible. You have no idea what value the change will bring you until you change, even a tiny behavior.- Realizing where you are today means changes are in motion, and here is where you get to design the new/real you. The more you are willing to change, the richer your life becomes; the more risk you accept, the faster you grow. Yes, some risks are scary, so we are starting small.
- Do you ever take a shower? Most people indulge several times a week. Great, start washing on the OTHER side of your body. Use your non-dominant hand to spread the soap to make this even more interesting. It will feel awkward when you finally remember to start this process (figure about a week after you put a sticky note on the mirror). Staying with the change for an entire week changes your life.
- The idea is to get your brain to work differently while staying safe. Washing your body with the other hand is not risking anything. The exercise is to acquaint you with the power of accepting risk to get better outcomes.
- Staying with body care, start shaving from the other side of your body. Most people shave. Begin on the opposite side of your routine. DO NOT USE YOUR NON-DOMINANT HAND. There is too much danger in cutting yourself. For reference, I start at a different place on my face every time I shave to remind myself that change brings success.
Welcome to the new you. Your change has already begun. Reading the information here has changed how you process information. Yes, really. When you thought about how to wash or shave differently, your brain started working on the delivery details. Your brain is constantly working toward a better life for the real you.
